Abstract:

The purpose of this research is a survey of the effectiveness of three different treatment approach to patellofemotal PAIN SYNDROME. For this purpose, 24 patient affected by PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME with an average age 40.89 were divided in to two groups of exercise therapy and physiotherapy. The exercise therapy group used strengthening and stretching exercise, the physiotherapy group, on the other hand, used ultrasound, TENS and patella mobilization technique. The instrument used included; VAS scale, Kujala questionnaire and step and skate testes. The VAS scale and Kujala questionnaire were completed before the starting of the therapeutical program and at the end of every week for the evaluation of the subject's PAIN and subjective faction. The functional test of step and skate were also used before the starting of the therapeutical program and at the end of the sixth week for evaluating subjects objective function. The data obtained were analyzed by the SPSS software and statistical tests of repeated measured ANOV A, Wilcaxon and Mann-Whitney U in the significant level (P£0.05).The results showed that the exercise therapy had significant effects on the rate of PAIN and function of the patient affected by PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME aner the sixth week treatment and showed the function improvement and significant PAIN decreased at the end of fifth and sixth weeks respectively (P>0.05). According to the research findings we can conclude that the patients affected by PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME react to the exercise therapy programs rapidly and appropriately.

Abstract:

Background and Aim: PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME (PFPS) is one of the most frequentl musculoskeletal disorders. The cause of PFPS has been reported to be multifactorial. Patellar malalignments are accepted as the leading cause of PF PAIN and PF joint disorders. The purpose of the present study was to compare the patellar alignment between subjects with PATELLOFEMORALl PAIN SYNDROME and healthy subjects.Materials and Methods: Patellar alignment was compared in two groups. Twenty five patients with 12-15 months of PFPS and 25 matched healthy subjects were selected to take part in the study. Congruence angle, Patella height, and Lateral patellar tilt angle were measured by radiographic images. Also, quadriceps angle was measured clinically. Results: The patella alta and lateral patellar tilt angle were significantly greater in patients group compared with those in the healthy group. There was no significant difference in Q angle and Congruence angle between the two groups. Conclusion: Delays in treatment of patients with PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME provide direction changes of patellar alignment. Therefore, to prevent further changes to the patellar alignment in these patients, early resolving of the possible predisposing factors is essential.

Abstract:

PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME (PFPS) is the most common overuse SYNDROME in athletes. It is one of the causes of anterior knee PAIN in athletic population who come to the sports medicine clinic. PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN is more common among female athletes especially adolescents and young adults. Symptoms include: persistent PAIN behind the patella or peripatella. PAIN increases on ascending and descending stairs and squatting and prolonged sitting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of PFPS in Iranian female athletes.418 female athletes aged 15-35 years were examined in five sports: Soccer (190), volleyball (103), running (42), fencing (45) and rock climbing (38). The athletes who had nontraumatic onset anterior knee PAIN of at least 3 months that increased in descending and ascending stairs and squatting, had no other causes of anterior knee PAIN such as ligament instability, bursitis, meniscal injury, tendonitis and arthritis and no history of knee surgery during the one past year were diagnosed as PFPS. 26/190 (13.68 %) soccer players, 21/103 (20.38 %) volleyball players, 7/42 (16.66 %) runners, 6/45 (13.33 %) fencers and 10/38 (26.31%) rock climbers had PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN. Among the 418 female athletes who were evaluated 70 had PFPS. Rock climbers were the most common athletes with PFPS followed by volleyball players and runners.
